How to spot a tax scam
Every filing season brings a wave of impersonation attempts. The rules below are simple and they hold in almost every case.
- The IRS opens contact by postal mail — never by phone call, text or email.
- No agency will ever demand payment by gift card, wire transfer or cryptocurrency.
- Nobody legitimate will threaten immediate arrest or deportation over the phone.
- Verify any preparer at ctec.org or in the IRS directory before handing over documents.
- A preparer who will not sign your return or give you their PTIN is a serious warning sign.
- When in doubt, send us the letter. We will verify it against your account transcript for free.
