Where we came from

The firm was founded by Tania Herbert, who has spent nearly two decades working with California business owners. TM Tax Advisors and Herbert Financial Group share leadership, staff and standards: TM Tax Advisors handles tax, accounting and business advisory; Herbert Financial covers the wider wealth, insurance and estate planning work. Clients who need both are served by the same people.

The Azusa office exists because the San Gabriel Valley is full of the kind of business we are built for — contractors, restaurants, trucking, property, clinics, agencies — run by owners who are very good at what they do and who have been poorly served by accountants who only ever sent them a return.

What makes this different

Most tax firms are structured around one busy season. Work arrives in February, is processed at volume, and the relationship goes quiet until the following year. It is an efficient way to run a preparation shop. It is a poor way to reduce anybody’s tax.

We are organised the other way round. Bookkeeping closes monthly on a published calendar. Planning happens in the autumn, while decisions can still be changed. Quarterly check-ins keep the projection honest. And when a notice arrives, it is answered by the person who prepared the return — at no additional charge on work we did.

It is a slower, more involved way to work, and it is why we take on fewer clients per accountant than a volume shop does.

How we work

Six things we hold to

Not a values poster. These are the decisions we actually make differently because of them.

Defensible, never aggressive

Every position we take is one we would be comfortable defending in an examination — because we are the ones who would defend it. We turn down work that depends on positions we do not believe in.

Plain language, always

If you leave a meeting unable to explain your own tax position to your spouse or your business partner, we have not done our job. Jargon is usually a sign that someone has not thought it through.

Proactive, not reactive

Filing a return tells you what already happened. We would rather spend an hour in October changing the outcome than an hour in April explaining it.

Fixed fees, agreed first

You approve the scope and the number before work begins. No hourly meter running while you ask a question, and no invoice that arrives larger than the conversation.

Serving the community we are in

Azusa is a city where most households speak a language other than English at home. Spanish-language service here runs through the whole engagement, not just the first phone call.

Your data, treated properly

Encrypted portal rather than email, access limited to the people working on your file, and a written information security programme as required of tax professionals.

Credentials

What “Enrolled Agent” actually means

An Enrolled Agent is licensed directly by the U.S. Department of the Treasury and holds unlimited rights of practice before the Internal Revenue Service — able to represent any taxpayer, in any state, on any tax matter. It is a federal credential, earned by examination and maintained by continuing education, and it is the only one that specialises exclusively in taxation.

Alongside it we hold California CTEC registration (#A354653), and we have Certified Public Accountants on staff who review complex returns and prepare financial statements.
