02Security
Why we insist on the portal
A tax return contains everything an identity thief needs: full name, date of birth, Social Security number, address, employer, bank account. Email was never built to carry that. A message sits unencrypted on several servers on its way, then stays in two mailboxes indefinitely, and a mailbox is the single most common place client data leaks from.
Tax professionals are required to maintain a written information security plan — IRS Publication 4557 sets out what that means for preparers, and the FTC Safeguards Rule makes it a legal obligation. Ours begins with a simple rule we do not bend: your Social Security number does not go in an inbox, ours or yours.
